Breaking Barriers-Not Alone

Have you ever felt that you have no control over something? I know I have. This is something that we all experience at some point. These are things that no matter how much we pray about them, they don’t seem to go away. Well, maybe because you need more than just prayer. Maybe you need to grab on to God in a whole different way.

There was a time when I couldn’t break down a wall, no matter how much I prayed. But the thing is, I wasn’t being fully dependent on God. Therefore, I let go of something that was not allowing me to let God bring that wall down. That is called fasting. Fasting is NOT a diet, it’s refraining from something for a spiritual purpose. When we fast, we experience physical weakness that helps us realize how spiritual weak we actually are.

“When you fast, do not somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”-Matthew 6:16-18

By fasting we allow God to work on our prideful, self-sufficient heart. There are times when we need more than prayer. I am NOT saying that you stop praying. What I am saying is that by fasting, you have that extra time to pray more. You have that weakness, that allows you to depend more on him to fill what is not there. We need to hold on to God in a way that we let go of the things we believe satisfy our bodies.

Fasting helps us set aside distractions to seek God’s will and power in a situation. We let go of the things that sometimes separate us from God. I am guilty of this. Sometimes I spend endless hours watching tv or on social media, when I can be spending time with God and getting to know him. Allowing him to work in me.

When we fast, we say, “Not my will, but yours, Lord”. You completely let go of what you want for your life and let God walk you to where He wants you to be. We do it to break those walls and chains that are not of this world.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” Ephesians 6:12

Fasting isn’t about appearing spiritual, it’s about becoming spiritual. You don’t fast, so that others can see how close you are to God, you do it so that you CAN actually get close to God. I believe that there are things that will not be broken without fasting. Some chains need a little bit more power to cut through. When you’re tired of dealing with it – Let God break it. He already gave you the victory!

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”-Ephesians 6:10

With every blessing, there is testing. The devil will come and try to shake you. But stand firm, and fully give it to the Lord. Spend time praying and fasting, and God will take care of it.

I personally love spending time on social media and watching TV. I can spend hours, seriously looking at the same things. When I fast, I let go of something that I depend on, on a daily basis. Most people do food and I do too, but one of the hardest fast I have ever done is letting go of social media. When i say social media, I leave everything, from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Netflix. I let go of those things and grab on to the hand of God. Through fasting and prayer, the walls and chains come down. At the end of a fast, you will feel clean, and you will know that the VICTORY is there.

I’ve experienced it myself, just try it and you will see the hand of God move mountains.
